It uses TCP and generic routing encapsulation (GRE) to enable VPN communication, encryption and encapsulation. PPTP VPN generally utilizes TCP port 1723 to create a tunnel and connect with a peer and further utilize this connection to create a GRE tunnel on the same peer to enable encapsulation.
